This graph shows revenue generating activities for a Master Farmer in Kanel, Senegal in December 2019 and January 2020. A “Master Farmer” is an individual trained by Peace Corps staff who works with their assigned Volunteer to introduce and showcase new and innovative agricultural techniques to their community. Collecting revenue data can aid in analyzing the program's success, as such, I collected data in December 2019 and January 2020 to gain a better understanding.
December 2019 Revenue was 314,610 CFA (West African Francs) while January 2020 Revenue was 520,225 CFA. December had a wider variety of activities, diversifying economic risk of relying on certain activities. The month of December is when the weather transitions to cold-season, creating an environment that is ideal for planting and growing vegetables. Since it is the beginning of the growing season, it is expected that the vegetable sales would not be as high for this month but with careful planning trees can be used to generate additional revenue. Vegetable sales are generally higher in January and is also the month when farmers are buying vegetable nurseries to jump start their gardens. January has 3 primary money generating activities: vegetables, vegetable nurseries, and fruit (Jujube). Fresh fruit is a niche market in northern Senegal, especially in January when the Jujube is the only fruit in season. Grafted varieties of this fruit will also sell for a higher price than non-grafted varieties.
